Boston herald.com - Paul Pierce fell to the ground and grabbed his right knee, and this great Celtics turnaround was crumpled in a heap. Doc Rivers looked somber as the hope drained from his face, and the picture, as always, was worth a thousand words.
“Honestly, I thought the worst,” the Celtics coach said. “When they carried Paul off . . . I’ve had the injury. I’ve seen it. I just assumed it was the knee.”
Instead, this great renaissance continues, this time with a 98-88 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers last night in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, an affair that will be remembered as much for what failed to happen as for what did. Maybe the Celtics are indeed in a different era of their history. Maybe their luck has changed for the better again. Maybe they will complete this resurrection with their record 17th NBA title, just as Pierce came off the floor last night to move them one step closer.
