Boston Herald.com - It’s the kind of story that will grow entirely out of proportion in the re-telling. In another 20 years, perhaps Paul Pierce will be remembered for shrugging off the effects of a broken leg to return and lead the Celtics to a Game 1 win over the Lakers.
In truth it was a strained right knee that required Pierce to be carried off the floor. The captain’s return from that third quarter injury provided all the energy and emotion the Celtics needed in their 98-88 win over the Lakers last night for a 1-0 series lead in the NBA Finals.
“One thing we know about P is that he’s very tough, and we’ve seen him play through numerous injuries throughout the season,” said fellow forward Kevin Garnett. “There were times when we thought he wasn’t going to play, and he played. He played his best, if you ask me. And when he came (back) out, you just heard the roar of the crowd. He was walking, he was up on his own strength, and he rejuvenated us.
